BCU Awarding Body Policy Documents (applied to BCU UKCC Coaching Awards)

Accredited Prior Learning (APL)

The BCU does recognise that in some instances aspirant coaches will have prior experience that may enable them to enter the Coaching Awards programme at a higher level.  If you feel you have experience that can be accredited as prior experience refer to the BCU Accredited Prior Learning (APL) Policy below.  APL is used mainly to allow coaches access to a BCU training or assessment course where the do not hold the specific prerequisite for that award, but hold something else equitable.

Applications are considered by the BCU APL Panel.  Applications should be forwarded to the SCA in the first instance.  Please contact us to find out the next APL Panel date.

If you are applying for:
  • Direct Entry to BCU UKCC Level 2 (i.e. do not hold BCU UKCC Level 1 Award); or
  • Registration for BCU Moderate Water Endorsement without holding BCU UKCC Level 2 award
please refer to the detailed guidance and criteria available from the document linked above and submit your application directly to the SCA. Applications meeting this criteria do not normally require consideration of the APL panel and will be processed quicker.

The following specific guidance lists recognised alternatives. It is not necessary to apply for APL if you hold one of the items listed.
