BCU Leadership Awards

Leadership awards involve training and assessment to enable leaders to lead a group of paddlers competent in the environment and craft.

For details of the pre-requisites for training and assessment elements open the relevant syllabus.

4 Star Leader

The 4 Star Leader Award providers the holder with the remit of leading a group of competent paddlers in a moderate water environement in their respective discipline. The 4 Star Leader Award can be achieved and used without holding any coach training or awards.

Full details of the remit can be found in the BCU Terms of Reference.

This discipline specific award is designed to indicate that the candidate has the skill level to safely paddle and lead other competent paddlers on sections of moderate water. A four Star leader will have the all round paddling ability, safety, rescue and basic leadership required to undertake trips on sheltered - moderate water with a group of paddlers able themselves to be able to operate in a self-sufficient manner. The new award looks much the same structurally to the old 5 star, but the personal skills and leadership reflect an easier environment.

The 4 Star Leader Award is a leadership award and not a coaching award. It is not suitable for introducing beginners to the sport. If you wish to introduce people to moderate water conditions, you must get your Moderate Water Endorsement.

In order to obtain the 4 Star Leader award, you will have to attend a training course which will last a minimum of 2-days, or with sufficient evidence of both personal paddling experience and leadership experience, you can use the APL process to apply to go straight to assessment (with all other pre-requisites in place). The assessment course lasts 2-days.
