 About the SCA

Established in 1939, the Scottish Canoe Association is the recognised governing body of canoeing and kayaking in Scotland.  The SCA works to improve access to waterways, has a comprehensive canoe coaching scheme and uses lottery funding to support Scottish Olympic Medallists – current and future.  We provide our members with an opportunity to have their views represented at local, national and international levels.  The SCA recognises the major contribution made by individual members to the development of our sport within Scotland and throughout the world.  Our membership is represented by an elected Board of Directors, which oversees the five streams of the organisation - Access, Recreation, Coaching, Competition and Clubs.  Within these streams are working committees - Recreational Rivers, Touring, Coaching, Wild Water Racing, Sprint Racing, Marathon, Canoe Polo, Slalom and Surf.  The Scottish Canoe Association is a founding member of the British Canoe Union (also comprising the other home nation associations of Wales, Northern Ireland and England). The SCA is in receipt of investment from sportscotland. The sportscotland Investment Principles document 2011-2015 explains the rational for investment into Scottish Sports Governing Bodies as well as Local Authorities.

We exist to:

  • Actively promote and support all canoeing activity conducted in a responsible manner;
  • Protect existing and to secure improved access to waterways, facilities and finance;
  • Improve the quality and quantity of coaching at all levels;
  • Support aspirations and achievements of Scottish paddlers at domestic, international, world and Olympic level;
  • Encourage take up and participation in all aspects of canoeing;
  • Educate paddlers on care of their environment;
  • Promote individual membership of the SCA as a positive aspect of canoeing in Scotland.
