The SCA believes that equity means more than equality. It’s not just about equal numbers, but is concerned more with fairness, justice, inclusion and respect. Equity in sport is about making sure that everyone has an equal chance to participate in sport if they choose to do so, and that no one is discriminated against for reasons such as gender, race, disability, age, religious or political belief, sexual orientation, social background, marital status or pregnancy. It is also about making sure that any barriers that stand in the way of people who traditionally do not take part in sport, are removed.

Everyone involved in sport should be concerned with good practice, fairness and inclusion and ensuring opportunities to participate are fair for all.

Equality Standard in Sport

The SCA is currently working to achieve the Equality Standard in Sport - a framework to assist sports organisations to widen access and reduce inequalities in sport from under-represented individuals, groups and communities.

The Standard is based around 2 broad themes:

  • Developing Our Organisation
  • Developing Our Services

and has 4 levels of achievement:

  • Foundation: SCA have achieved this level
  • Preliminary:  SCA have achieved this level
  • Intermediate SCA are currently working towards Intermediate level
  • Advanced
