Paddlesport Leader

LOOKING TO LEAD PADDLESPORT JOURNEYS?

  • Do you want to lead people from all walks of life on sheltered water?
  • Are you a paddler or do you have experience of paddling?
  • Do you want to support your club or organisation leading mixed craft?
  • If so, the Paddlesport Leader Award could be for you!

WHY BECOME A PADDLESPORT LEADER?

First of all, the Paddlesport Leader Award is open to all paddlers! The award supports your existing skills and enables you to lead fun, safe and enjoyable trips.

Secondly, you can design your own learning journey, using formal and informal opportunities to develop your skills.

Furthermore, this award is used by clubs, outdoor centres and organisations to support their activity delivery on mixed craft. This includes single or tandem craft.

WHAT CAN A PADDLESPORT LEADER DO?

Your award will support you to run safe and enjoyable trips, based on your group’s needs and aspirations. You will lead journeys, on sheltered water, for a range of mixed craft.

As a Leader, you can work independently or be deployed by a club, centre or organisation to lead trips and journeys. The purpose of these trips may be wide ranging from educational experiences, social adventures or trying something new.

You will be able to provide British Canoeing Awards and Training such as:

  • Personal Performance Awards – Paddle Start and Paddle Discover.

Note: other experience, training or qualifications may be required.

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR THE TRAINING COURSE?

There are no formal Personal Performance Award or Safety Award requirements to becoming a Paddlesport Leader. However, to get the best from your course you need to feel comfortable in or on your craft and be able to independently paddle on sheltered water. Therefore, we recommend holding the the Paddle Explore Award before booking on your training (or equivalent).

You can look at a Sample Programme here.

    WHAT IS REGISTRATION?

Anyone wishing to pursue a Coaching or Leadership Qualification is required to centrally register with the appropriate National Association (British Canoeing, Canoe Wales, Scottish Canoe Association, Canoe Association of Northern Ireland).Registration is the process by which you confirm your intention to study towards a particular qualification. It includes:

    • Checking of previous qualifications
    • Completing and signing the Registration Form
    • Medical Declaration (if required)
    • Setting up and providing access to course resources and eLearning (where applicable)
    • Acceptance of the terms and conditions of study and helps you understand your rights whilst undertaking the qualification and how your data will be used.

Once you are registered you become a learner with the National Association, we are able to contact you with relevant information and updates to your course of study, help you find a course and local support or mentoring.

WHEN AND WHERE DOES REGISTRATION TAKE PLACE?

We would recommend that you register as early in your development journey as possible to access all of the support and learning resources. As a bare minimum and to support your learning we would recommend registering at least two weeks before your Assessment. Registration is an online process through your SCA membership portal. Registration is separate from booking a place on a course; the latter is done directly with the Course Provider. It is worth noting that many Course Providers want to see evidence of Registration at the point of booking.
