Club Volunteer Conference: Supporting Volunteers in Clubs - BOOKINGS WILL CLOSE 29th March at noon

What is it all about?


The CVC is designed to support coaches & volunteers that are working in clubs in Scotland. Run in partnership with sportscotland National Outdoor Training Centre, Glenmore Lodge, the event has become one of the highlights in our calendar; participants attend year after year to pick up new tips, expand on their skills & get to know people in other clubs. 


Who is it for?

 

  • CVC is designed to support people involved in the running of clubs across Scotland
  • Whether you are a club volunteer, committee member, leader or coach, or aspirational leader or coach: if you’re volunteering in a club in Scotland, this weekend is not to be missed
  • This year we will also be joined by our Young Ambassador team to help support the event, learn new skills, suggest ideas for clubs and work towards their future paddlesport ambitions.

When

The weekend kicks off on the Friday evening, with an optional dinner and workshops, followed by an action packed schedule on Saturday & Sunday. 


Where  

We are delighted this year to hold the event at Glenmore Lodge.

  • Twin rooms are available at Glenmore Lodge either in the main building or in chalets
  • If booking a shared room, you can let us know when booking who you want to share with.


A couple of things to note:

  • Workshops (and transport to workshops) will be shared between participants
  • Meals and evening activities will be based onsite

  • Friday Evening

    Mentoring 

    Mentoring is something that will help us all improve. Mentoring can take many forms from a very formal relationship to the more informal one. This workshop is about what is succesful mentoring and how to get the most out of it. 


    Rolling Improvement 

    An evening spent looking at improving your roll. Whether you can roll every time or have a shaky 50/50 roll then let’s look at some common faults and ways to rid them from your performance.


    Rope Work for White Water  

    A look at simple, safe effective rope work for those operating on white water. This is a practical workshop covering throwlines, lengths of tapes and karabiners. If time allows it will also cover mechanical advantage, what to carry and where to carry it.


    Strength & Conditioning for Paddlers 

    An opportunity to look at ways that can prepare you and / or your paddlers for paddlesport. A practical workshop that will cover key physiological principles to allow you to look after and ultimately prepare yourself for paddling. 

     

    Tidal Planning for the sea kayaker 

    What do we need to know and where do we find out the information? This is for all those that need a little bit of help with understanding tides and how to use the information. Useful for all levels of paddler but aimed at those new to paddling on the sea.


    What works best for your club: An opportunity to share ideas? 

    The CVC is a great opportunity to share best practice across clubs and this workshop will look at success strategies which work and those which are not quite successful. This could be regarding membership retention, organising club trips, coach development pathways etc etc


    Be Adventure Aware

    This workshop will discuss important factors to consider when planing a paddling trip. This could be a single day club trip or a multi day club expedition and will cover topics including decision making, heuristics and what not to think about. 


    Raising Awareness of Environmental Issues, Impacts and Actions for Paddlers 

    This workshop will discuss the main issues present in the environment, the impacts and will explore ways paddling can sustain the environment, by creating engaging activities. The range of topics will vary from non native invasive species, plastic pollution, algal bloom etc.


    The importance of embeding EDI in your club 

    The SCA recognises the importance of embeding Ethnicity, Diversity and Inclusion in your club. This workshop looks at the how we can be successfull in attracting and maintaing a diverse membership. 


  • Saturday Full Day

    Surf Kayak Award 

    Have you been surf kayaking a few times & loved it? Would like to learn more so you can go Surf Kayaking with a suitable forecast, be safe & have loads of fun?  This full day Saturday session will cover a broad base of the Surf Kayak Award.

    Progressive Surf Kayak Award 

    Do you go Surf Kayaking?  Can you already surf your kayak, turn when you want to in both directions and roll?  Do you want to improve your planning, surf skills and knowledge aiming towards Surf Kayak leadership training?     Improver Canoe - River skills 

    Looking to help others on the river with their canoe skills? Then this is for you!! Your perfect masterclass to help you understand 'what' we need to do and 'why' of controlling your craft. Spending time as a solo paddler on grade 1/2 water where river skills such as crossing currents, precision lines, accuracy and of course understanding of trim will all be on the agenda. Those who are looking to polish their canoe skills on moving water will also get a lot from this workshop. 


    Improver Sea Kayak 

    This is a workshop that will cover essential skills for taking more responsibility during a paddle. From planning the day, running the logistics and then on water skills such as manoeuvring, positioning as well as general paddling skills. It is a busy day!


    Improver WWK 

    This is workshop is all about helping paddlers move from grade 2 white water onto grade 3. Those who are nervous on grade 3 and would like some help would also get a lot from this workshop.


    Intermediate / Advanced WWK 

    A full day on the white water and something for those working in grade 3 and above. Spend the day with the coaches looking at improving and performing! 


    Freestyle "Play the River" 

    We all spend time on rivers but do we always get the most out the features that exist? This day long workshop will take a look at usable features and blend strokes which will have you flipping end over end. 


    Practical White Water Rescues

    If you spend any time on white water then come and look at some top tips and handy hints for dealing with simple, common scenarios. Regardless if you have done the WWSR or not, regardless of SUP, canoe or kayak then this one day workshop is for you. 


    Sea Kayak Rough Water Control

    This is a workshop for sea kayakers who need help in the rough stuff. If you paddle at Sea Kayak Award standard (no requirement to hold the award) then let us take you onto rougher water and help you with your sea reading, boat handling and tactics for when the sea is doing its best to push you about.


    An introduction to White Water SUP

    An opportunity to get involved in the wonderful world of White Water Stand Up Paddleboarding. Spending time looking at understanding your movements and tactics for controlling the board as you move around on the river. 


    Womens WWK Development 

    An all women day on the river. Looking at developing control and finesse in your paddling so you can style the lines with ease and confidence. This workshop is for those paddling at White Water Award standard (no need to hold the award) or coaches looking for more top tips and handy hints.

    How to Coach Rolling 

    This workshop is aimed at those who coach or aid others with their roll. We will look at building up progressions, practices and exercises that can help you to help others.  


    Open Water Rescues 

    A workshop to take your rescues out into open water. This is a practical workshop that aims to look at simple and effective ways to deal with paddling incidents in the open water. Suitable for all craft and for those that are Paddle Explore Standard. Also suitable for those coaching others.


    Getting wet can be fun: Building confidence in get into and out of sea kayaks through games. 

    This workshop is aimed at building confidence in your sea kayak through a series of fun games. Developing balance and building techniques for getting into and out of your sea kayak.  Suitable for sea kayakers and paddlers of all levels. Perfect for those looking to build confidence.

    Introdcution to SUP Racing 

    Plenty of paddlers have been getting into SUP. Now here is your chance to develop these skills and progress skills relating to SUP racing. This would also be suitable for those that are looking to try SUP for the first time or for those who want to progress their forward paddling techniques. 


    Surf Ski for Beginners

    An emerging discipline within the Scottish club scene, Surf Skis are a fun way of getting out in the natural environment with oodles of opportunities for improving fitness, advenutre and competition. This workshop will introduce to some safety and rescue techniques as well as develop your forward paddling to get the best out your ski. p your forward paddling to get the best out your ski.

    Improver Rolling 

    Got a roll that needs refinement? Then here you go the workshop that aims to help you get to the next level. 


    Passage planning, decision making & Incident management 

    How do we make decisions about where to go kayaking on the sea? What information do we need to plan extended trips and how do we go about dealing with incidents as they unfold? This interactive workshop will give you tools and knowledge necessary to plan great trips and react the right way when thinghs go a little left field. 


    Rope work for Canoeists and Kayakers 

    A session exploring ropes! Mechanical advantages, bridles, securing loads to banks and boats, knots and all things ropes. This is suitable for all paddlers with a focus on skills that will support those that are going onto paddle on moving waters. A great refresher for those that have done WWSR as well as a good intro.


    Stand Up Paddleboarding 

    Plenty of paddlers have been getting into SUP. Now here is your chance to have a go with a coach developing control, power and finesse in your paddling.


    Stroke Work for Canoeists 

    What’s in a name – Indian stroke, J stroke, Knifed J, Box stroke, Pitch stroke! Let us help! Develop a deeper understanding of the strokes and learn how they work so that you can add more options for moving your canoe. Whether you are tandem or solo this is for you. Suitable for those that have done some canoeing and above.


    Surf Ski Development

    An emerging discipline within the Scottish club scene, Surf Skis are a fun way of getting out in the natural environment with oodles of opportunities for improving fitness, advenutre and competition. This developmental workshop will take a closer look at techniques for making your surf skills move faster through the water.

    Leading Sea Kayak Trips 

    This workshop is for those that are Sea Kayak Award standard and above (there is no need to hold the award). It sets out to help look at critical leadership skills to help have successful trips. Everyone can be a leader, if you have some knowledge of how then you can be more useful for the trips that you are taking. Reading the environment, tactics for journeying, communication strategies and positioning will all be covered.


    Leading WWK Trips 

    This workshop is for those that are at the White Water Award standard and above (there is no need to hold the award). It sets out to help look at critical leadership skills to help have successful trips. Everyone can be a leader, if you have some knowledge of how then you can be more useful for the trips that you are taking. Reading the environment, tactics for running the river, communication strategies and positioning will all be covered.


    Performance WWK 

    Make your kayak behave and perform with / for you! The ultimate white water kayak day where we will look at performance gains on the white water and get everything smooth and polished. Suitable for those that are already working well on grade 2 white water.


    Sea Kayak - Personal Safety Skills 

    This one day workshop out on the sea aims to look at critical personal safety. What to carry, where to carry it along with the means to look after yourself. Rolling, getting back in / on your kayak and self-rescues will all be part of the day. This workshop will also support those looking after others on the sea.


    Intermediate White Water SUP

    Traditional Canoe Skills 

    Beyond the paddle! Time to embrace sails, ropes and poles as a means to keep the journey going. Using both open water and river this will look at how you go between these traditional canoe skills.


    Women Open Canoe  

    An all women day on the river / open water. Looking at developing control and finesse in your paddling so you can style the lines with ease and confidence. You should be happy to paddle on open water / grade 1 & 2 river.

    This workshop aims to consider how we create positive coaching environments for paddlers from all levels, focusing on the journey and not the destination, considering how the process of learning can result in a better outcome.


    Surf Ski for Beginners

    An emerging discipline within the Scottish club scene, Surf Skis are a fun way of getting out in the natural environment with oodles of opportunities for improving fitness, advenutre and competition. This workshop will introduce you to some safety and resuce techniques as well as develop your forward paddling to get the best out of your ski.

    Thought you had to roll to do Freestyle? Think again, here’s how you can use Freestyle to improve your boat control while just having fun  - warning may also contain rescues.

    Struggling with your roll? Or do you have to help others who are struggling. Let us help with a variety of tasks and games that will aid in progressing the roll.

    Using moving water for freestyle, reading eddylines and feeling the flow to fuel your imagination and break the rules.


    Improver SUP 

    Done SUP before? Then this is for you. This half day workshop will help with developing power and control on the board.


    Rolling Games 

    Rolling is fun. Let us show games that we can play. These may just seem to be silly fun but you will see how they can develop a strong reliable roll in no time at all. Suitable for all, although if you have a roll (however shaky) or are coaching rolling you will get more from it.

Mental Health First Aid Training - 20th May 2024 at Glenmore Lodge AWARD IN FIRST AID FOR MENTAL HEALTH AT SCQF LEVEL 5 (1 day course) We are delighted to be able to offer you the opportunity to complete Mental Health First Aid Training at Glenmore Lodge Monday 20th May 0830 - 1730. This will be run by Noush Duffy and Mo Samson - two experienced paddlesport coaches, Mental Health First Aid trainers and part of the Paddle Scotland Equality Groups. This Paddle Scotland course is being offered at the subsidised rate of £75 (inc. lunch and refreshments for the day). Bookings close 11 May (this has been extended) . Sunday evening accommodation at Glenmore Lodge is also available to book via the link below. We are passionate about supporting paddlesport coaches to increase knowledge in this area so you can better support the people you work with. We'd love it if you could attend.
