Meet Engagement Award winners Willowgate Activity Centre

Feb 12, 2024

Congratulations to Willowgate Activity Centre who won the Engagement Award at the 2024 Delivery Partner Conference.

Willowgate Activity Centre, a charity-run activity centre, is a place for adventure, exploration and good ol' fun set in the heart of Perthshire, just a stone's throw away from Perth. Willowgate have a breadth of engagement sessions, such as the FIT for Girls sessions, their weekly kayaking groups which have developed a group of young paddlers who are fully engaged in the sport and are now Scottish Canoeing Association Young Ambassadors, to 'pay as you feel' safety sessions ensuring safety training is affordable for their community.

The Engagement Award at the 2024 British Canoeing Delivery Partner Awards was sponsored by Aquapac, who would like to congratulate Adam and the team.

More about Willowgate:

Willowgate is based in Perth, Scotland and run a variety of community and commercial based activities across different disciplines and environments. We work a lot with grass root paddlers and clubs working from introductions to paddling to developing new coaches and leaders. We are really lucky to work with young people and adults over a long period of time, seeing them go from taking part in their first paddling session, to becoming a volunteer to becoming an Instructor and Coach.

We have worked hard since opening to work with young people and adults to support them onto their paddlesports journey and also into their first roles within the outdoor industry. As part of this process, we have seen young people attend a 5-week course, then become a volunteer, develop to an assistant instructor and then an instructor in their own right. They have then gone on to start degrees in outdoor education. One of the most empowering areas of this is that the original volunteers are seen as role models for the next generation who are now becoming role models for the 3rd generation. They all support each other, engaging in completing Personal Performance Awards and Instructor/ Coach awards to support those entering the sport.

We decided to become a Delivery Partner...

so that we could link better with other paddlesport providers and build up the community around us. One of the best logistical bits of being a Delivery Partner for us is the dashboard that allows us to keep track of the staff qualifications, first aid and safeguarding.

We are immensely proud to have won this award...

since the work that we have been doing since we opened in 2017 to engage more people in paddlesports is now really showing at the centre, in Perthshire and further afar. We are so proud of our team, volunteers, weekly kayak club and all those we work with and to be recognised for this award is amazing.
