New Paddle-Ability Tutors

With the SCA’s ongoing commitment to make paddlesport more inclusive, SCA had a need to increase the group of tutors able to deliver the disability awareness training - the British Canoeing Paddle-Ability module.

In October four candidates met for an orientation course at Willowgate Activity Centre near Perth. All of the new tutors already have an interest and experience in inclusive paddlesport, so are perfectly placed to deliver the award.  The new Paddle-Ability Tutors are:
  • Liam Watson - Scout Adventures Lochgoilhead
  • Adam Burns - Wilowgate Activity Centre
  • Gemma Hendry - Able 2 Adventures
  • Roger Holmes - SCA Regional Development Manager
The day's training started with a morning spent in the classroom to understand how to deliver the recently updated Paddle-Ability training, followed by an afternoon of more practical training on the water at Willowgate. The Paddle-Ability module is a classroom based course, but this further insight into some of the challenges and ways of overcoming them was hugely beneficial. The tutor helped the candidates to consider how they might coach or lead people with a visual or hearing impairment, as well as various rescue techniques that could be employed.

If you are part of a club or other organisation that would like to be more inclusive and would like some training then please feel free to contact one of the people above, or email Roger Holmes at the SCA and we can help to arrange a Paddle-Ability course or provide more guidance.
