Olympic Hopes Success at Nottingham Sprint Regatta

Jul 04, 2019
The 2nd June Regatta of 2019 at Nottingham was an important one as it was the National Inter-Clubs Championships as well as selection for the remaining spots available for the Olympic Hopes competition, which will be held in Bratislava this September.

There was a strong contingent of Scottish Performance Squad (SPS) athletes competing, with many of them in contention for selection places. Aided by their SPS coaches Anton Vazquez and Tomas Duarte and with the support of club coaches and family, they rose to the occasion and delivered their race plans time after time throughout the weekend. This resulted in one of the biggest Scottish Olympic Hopes contingents to date.
The athletes who won selection places and will be competing in Bratislava are as follows:
  • Jack Brockway
  • Maks Sielicki
  • Alexandra Armstrong
  • Aida Shaikh Ali
  • Hannah Clarkson
  • Kristina Armstrong
Full team list can be found HERE

A special mention must also go to Freya Randle. Freya was an instrumental part of what is an incredibly strong squad of U16 Girls within the SPS. Freya was also in very close competition for Olympic Hopes selection and has pushed and supported her teammates in their selections this weekend.

Everyone else racing also put in excellent performances, with lots of progress being made by athletes across the board as they strive towards the National Championships which will be held at Nottingham from the 30th August - 1st September. This included a full SPS U16 Boys crew which is improving constantly, it was great to see four lions in the boat together.

Most importantly though, the squad athletes were supporting each other across the weekend, with older athletes offering words of wisdom to the younger ones, athletes helping each other on and off the water and providing company and friendship across a long and hot weekend.

There was also representation from several Scottish Clubs, including a large contingent of paddlers from Glasgow Kayak Club as well as Linlithgow Kayak Racing Club, Forth Canoe Club and Edinburgh Schools Kayak Club.

Over the next couple of months we will have Scottish paddlers in action at the Junior and U23 European and World Championships as well as the Senior World Championships. The SPS will be embarking on a training camp at current 1000m World Champion Fernando Pimenta’s club, Ponte de Lima, in Portugal before racing at the National Championships and Olympic Hopes Competitions.
