Willowgate 18 & Under Coach Training Opportunity

Jan 24, 2024

After being inspired by our young paddlesport instructors and the young people who have started on their coaching qualification journey, Willowgate Activity Centre are running a Core Coach Training and a Sheltered Water Canoe/Kayak Coach Training course specifically for young people aged 14 to 18 years old.

Part 1 Core Coach Training - 2nd & 3rd March 2024

The Core Coach Training course is the first step towards gaining a British Canoeing Coaching Qualification. The course aims to give you the tools to plan and adapt your coaching sessions so that they work for the people you’re coaching. It’s a two day practical course where you will be out on the water learning about and trying out different coaching techniques. You can find out more about the qualification
here.

Part 2 Sheltered Water Canoe and/or Kayak Coach Training - 23rd & 24th March 2024

Once you have completed your Core Coach Training course you can go on to do the discipline specific training. This 2-day course focuses on how to coach the discipline specific skills. There are discipline specific training courses for 23 different paddlesport disciplines/environments. If you are most interested in coaching kayak and/or canoe in the Sheltered Water environment - this course is for you.

If you wish to coach a different discipline, you can attend Part 1 only, and go on to complete the Discipline Specific course independently. Or, if you have already completed your Core Coach Training, you can come and join Part 2.

The course tutor will be Adam Burns.

If you are interested in taking your qualifications a step further and becoming a Coach (in whatever discipline) this course could be for you.

Cost:

If you live in Scotland EACH course is subsidised by sportscotland scholarship funding;

  • Non-Residential £80

If you don't live in Scotland the cost for each course is:

  • Non-Residential £200

You will also need to be a Full/Junior member of the SCA (or other National Association, if you don’t live in Scotland). Currently £22.50/year for Under 18s; £49/year for adults.

The course is non-residential.

If you are able to give back and coach in your club, we encourage you to approach them to ask if they would be able to help cover the costs of your course, or see if they can help you find/apply for other funding.
