Coaching Futures Apprentice Day

Oct 20, 2021

At the beginning of September we had the pleasure of meeting coaching future apprentices from a variety of sports (Judo, Triathlon, Rowing, Curling and Canoeing). Coaching future apprentices are performance athletes who are making the transition to become coaches.

The day was a great opportunity for all the coaching future apprentices from different disciplines to meet each other, try new skills, and discuss coaching techniques. Throughout the day we gave them a chance to get on the water to familiarise themselves with the environment before being taught ICF slalom by our apprentices. This gave the apprentices  the opportunity to try their coaching skills on the rest of the group who have limited paddling experience.

This was followed by team challenges where everyone got the opportunity to coach and discuss their experiences and techniques. At the end of the day all of the apprentices were challenged with coaching a small group of canoeing performance athletes, which they did so successfully despite having limited knowledge of the sport.

The apprentices seemed to really enjoy their day and the relaxed setting “Getting to know everyone in a fun, friendly environment was perfect”. While getting a lot out of it “I now approach my session planning with more creativity and lateral thinking to keep the content fresh and interesting.“ We have no doubt they’ll become amazing coaches and can't wait to welcome them back in the future!
