British Canoeing has today announced the launch of the NEW Leadership Awards which aim to create even more opportunities for recognition and celebration of paddlers leading others on the water.
We know many existing Leaders and paddlers will have questions about the NEW qualifications and how this may impact their pathway/journey. Most of this information (and more) is in the ‘Leadership Awards Announcement’ document.
There is a full list of questions and answers in the ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ document.
For further details about the NEW Leadership Awards, please view the ‘NEW for 2021’ section of the British Canoeing Awarding Body website.
The NEW Leadership Awards will be available from 4th January 2021 and we know that existing or aspirant Leaders will be wondering how this may impact them.
Existing Leadership Award holders
Simply, Leadership Award holders do not need to take the new awards to remain current. As long as the Leadership Award still meets the requirements of your role and you hold National Association membership, a valid First Aid certificate and, from September 2020, current Safeguarding training and evidence of Continual Professional Development, you award is still valid.

Aspirant Leaders
Candidates currently working through their Leadership Award can choose to complete the Leadership Award this year, or slot into the new awards scheme from the 4th January 2021.
For further details about the NEW Leadership Awards, please visit the British Canoeing Awarding Body website.
As we prepare for the launch of the Leadership Awards suite, we need to recruit providers to support our delivery aspirations.
We currently have 50+ experienced Leadership Providers that deliver British Canoeing Leadership Training and Assessment Courses across Scotland.
Whilst many of these individuals will transfer to provide the new awards, we invite applications from further individuals who wish to deliver the new awards, and particularly from those who wish to deliver the awards with no existing workforce. We particularly welcome applications from women and minority groups who are currently under-represented in our wider team.
We welcome applications from members of the Rafting and Stand Up Paddleboard communities who may not at the moment have involvement with Scottish Canoe Association or British Canoeing.
Being a Leadership Provider is demanding, but also very rewarding as you will be directly supporting, mentoring and assessing leaders who go on to introduce, support and develop tens of thousands of people exploring the environment through our sport.
Application process/timeline
We will process applications as they are submitted, it is essential that you discuss your application with and seek the permission of your references before submission.
